Compliance report

A report shaped to show an auditor that a required test or control was done.

What it means

A compliance report is a document built to answer an auditor's question: was the required test done, by whom, on what, and what happened to the results? It records scope, dates, method, findings and fixes in a form that maps to a named standard.

It is not the same thing as a certification. The report is evidence that an activity took place. The auditor, assessor or customer then decides whether that evidence satisfies the requirement they are checking. The report supports a conclusion; it does not replace the auditor's own judgement.

Why it matters

Many deals and audits stall on paperwork rather than on security. A buyer's team asks for last year's test report and you have a chat thread. Standards such as PCI DSS expect penetration testing to be done and documented, and other frameworks expect evidence of risk-based testing.

A weak report costs time. An auditor who cannot see the scope, the dates or proof that high findings were fixed will ask again, and each round delays the audit or the contract. A clear report answers the follow-up questions before they arrive.

How it shows up

Auditors tend to look for the same things: a defined scope, test dates, who performed the work, the method followed, a list of findings with severity, and evidence that fixes were checked. A signed attestation letter often travels with the full report.

The usual mistakes are scope that does not match the audited system, a report that is a year old, findings with no recorded outcome, and a technical report handed over unchanged when the auditor wanted a summary. Keep the retest report with it, so the fixes are visible too.

Questions people ask

Compliance report, answered

Is a compliance report the same as a pentest report?

Not quite. A pentest report is the technical record of what was found. A compliance report uses that record, and adds the framing an auditor needs, such as which requirement it supports.

Many teams use one document with both a technical section and a summary.

Does a compliance report make us compliant?

No. It is evidence that one activity was done. Compliance is judged against the whole standard by an assessor or auditor.

A good report removes one item from the open list. It does not close the audit on its own.

How old can a compliance report be?

That depends on the standard and on the auditor. Many requirements expect testing at least once a year and after significant changes.

Check the exact wording of the requirement you are working to, rather than relying on a general rule of thumb.

Do auditors need to see every finding?

Often they want the full list of findings and the status of each, so they can see that serious ones were fixed. Some will accept a summary plus a sample.

Ask the auditor early what they need, so you do not redact or rewrite later.

Can we share the report with customers?

Customers often ask for it, usually under an NDA. Many teams share an executive summary and an attestation instead of the full detail, because the full report describes real weaknesses.

Decide the sharing rule before the first request arrives.

What will your auditor ask for?

We can evidence what each test covered: scope, the exploit that proved each finding, and a retest that shows the fix held. That gives an auditor the facts without guesswork. Ask us to run it on one of your applications.
