What do pending, online and offline mean for a scan agent?

Quick answer

An agent is pending when you added it but it has not enrolled yet. Online means it has enrolled and checks in for work. Offline means it stopped sending its regular signals. The status and Last seen appear on each row in Settings → Scan Agents.

The short version

Pending means the agent exists but has not enrolled yet. Online: it is running and checking in for work. Offline: it has stopped checking in, so Cyberlop cannot hand it a scan, and you should look at the machine it runs on.

How it works in Cyberlop

Each agent in Settings → Scan Agents has a row with Name, Status and Last seen. Status follows the life of the agent.

StatusWhat it meansWhat you do
pendingYou added the agent, but nothing has used its one-time token yetRun the container command on a machine in your network
onlineThe agent has enrolled and keeps checking in for workPick it as the Scan location on a profile
offlineThe agent has stopped sending its regular signalsCheck the container and its outbound connection

On first start, the agent swaps its one-time token for a lasting key and flips to online. A regular signal, called a heartbeat, keeps it there. No heartbeat? Offline. The same live online and offline view comes back from the agents list in the API.

Last seen tells you when Cyberlop last heard from the agent, which helps you judge how long a machine has been quiet.

What to do next

Watch for online before you point a profile at an agent, because a profile pinned to an agent that has not enrolled yet has nowhere to run. Wait. If a row stays on pending, read why an agent is stuck on pending. If it drops to offline, read why an agent shows offline.

You can also see how to check an agent's status and what Last seen shows.
