How do I mark a target as Dev, Staging or Prod?
Pick Dev, Staging or Prod in the Environment select of the New target dialog. Dev is the default. The choice shows in the Environment column on Targets. You cannot edit it later, so set it correctly or delete and recreate the target.
Steps
- Go to Targets and click + New target.
- Fill in the Name, Main URL and Scan type.
- Find the Environment select, below the repo fields.
- Choose Dev, Staging or Prod.
- Click Create target.
Good to know
| Where | What you see |
|---|---|
| Targets list | An Environment column with Prod, Dev or Staging |
| Target page | An Environment row in Target details |
- The default is Dev. If you do nothing, the target is saved as Dev, so check the select before you click Create target.
- The label is a record of where the app lives. Use it to tell your copies of the same app apart, for instance a staging and a production target with the same name.
- Targets are immutable. You cannot change the environment on an existing target. Delete it and create it again with the right value.
- Deleting a target also deletes its profiles, schedules, scans and findings. Export findings first from Issues.
Test the environment you are allowed to test. Staging is usually the safest place for exploitation checks, because a real browser acts on the live app. Get written permission before you test anything in production.
Keep naming consistent with your team. Some groups add the environment to the target name as well, such as a suffix, which makes search results on the Targets page easier to read at a glance.
