How do I create a tag in the tag registry?

Quick answer

Open Tags in the sidebar, type a name in the New tag card and click + Add tag. The tag then joins the central registry, so you can add it to profiles, filter by it and pick it in groups.

Steps

  1. Click Tags in the sidebar. A new workspace shows No tags yet and the hint Create a tag above to start grouping profiles.
  2. In the New tag card, click the Name box and type a name. The placeholder is production.
  3. Click + Add tag.
  4. Open a profile and find the tags field, which reads Add a tag and press Enter. Add your tag there.
  5. Use the tag as a chip filter on Scan Profiles, or pick it under Add by tag when you make a group.

Good to know

The registry is the central list of tags. Making a tag is safe to repeat, because the API describes the call as idempotent, so adding the same name twice does not make a second tag.

PermissionWhat it allows
tag:readList tags with usage counts
tag:createCreate a tag
tag:deleteDelete a tag
  • Pick short, stable names such as prod or payments. A tag is a label, so avoid putting secrets or personal data in it.
  • When we reviewed a workspace, a tag typed on one profile did not appear in the registry or in the group dialog. Add it here as well to be safe.
  • Missing add button? Ask an admin for the tag:create permission.

To remove a tag later, see how to delete a tag. To use it, read how to add tags to a profile and how to group by tag. The groups and tags tutorial covers the full flow.
